Had some free time recently, and its always a hard bit to motivate one self to do some own project. But there was this Airbus and Local Motors Drone Contest, and I thought a bit harder how drone would be relevant to our modern lifestyles?
I have developed a drone that would fit into our everyday lives, drone which is your servant and its design is adapted to urban environments. A drone that does not look like an aircraft or mechanical assembly – its more organic and human.
CHALLENGING OLD DOGMAS
The new era of sustainable energy and mobile technologies enables us to build new paradigms in automotive and aviation industries. I would like to challenge old dogmas of traditional thinking when it comes to airplanes or drones. Designing something from scratch and
not being effected by status quo.
NEW AGE PRODUCT ARCHITECTURE
I have changed product architecture leaning less towards engineering and more towards user cases. The cargo in the center and battery and engines around it hidden under structure. Sensors and cameras are scattered around pattern structure.
FUNCTIONAL BIONIC STRUCTURE
I wanted to create more organic and human design at the same time keeping safety, feasibility and function at core of this proposal. In the end I have built organic pattern cage which divides the air flow between electric engines hidden underneath. There are 8 powerful motors arrayed around the main cargo deck. Pattern units are functional, and facilitates details such as door buckles, landing feet, light LED, cameras, sonar scanners and so on.
3D PRINTED LIGHTWEIGHT BODY
Advanced manufacturing process with 3D printing technologies. The entire bodywork of drone is printed with lightweight but durable composite.
CARGO AT HEART
The essence of the concept is cargo which is secured with lid and four spring-loaded buckles. Cargo deck is at the heart of design, making it very easy to access.
SAFETY
The structure of drone is easy to manage, there is no protruding engines, all is tightly packed into mobile size. There are no moving or rotating parts making it strong , long lasting product.
CIVIL SERVANT
I imagine this type of drone can carry out very large number of tasks within city, such as mail delivery, medication delivery, groceries and other goods. Therefore its important that design of the craft is approachable by anybody – children, aged people and young professionals. Once you have a glance at the craft you know where cargo is located, other technicalities are
not relevant to consumers. It can be easily adapted to commercial business cases.
BUSINESS CATALYST
I thought about business angle, also how local businesses could benefit from modern drones. Since its has safe access to cargo and no protruding long wings it could deliver groceries to peoples backyards.
